Gradations of Light
Gradations of Light is a suite of seven graphic scores - visual images that take the place of the conventional music score to compose and direct experimental music. The seven original prints are equally visual works of art and musical compositions. They are the product of a collaboration between American composer and pianist Marilyn Crispell, and British visual artist, Jo Ganter. Marilyn Crispell has been a composer and performer of contemporary improvised music since 1978. For ten years, she was a member of the Anthony Braxton Quartet and the Reggie Workman Ensemble, and she has performed and recorded extensively as a soloist and with players on the American and international jazz scene. Her work with Jo Ganter is the latest of many collaborations with dancers, poets, film-makers and visual artists. She has been the recipient of three New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship grants, a Guggenheim Fellowship, and a Mary Flagler Cary Charitable Trust composition commission. Jo Ganter is a visual artist, printmaker and lecturer in Fine Art at the University of Edinburgh. She has won many awards for her work, including a Rome Scholarship. In 2003 she was elected to the Royal Scottish Academy of Art and Architecture. She has exhibited internationally, showing at the A>I>R. Gallery in New York in 2000 and winning the Canson Polska Award at the Cracow Print Triennial in 2012. Her work is included in many major collections, including the Museum of Fine Arts, Antwerp and the New York Public Library. Her collaborative work with musicians has seen her extend her practice into the moving image through animations of the music she helps visualise and compose. Musician and philosopher David Rothenberg has performed and recorded on clarinet with Pauline Oliveros, Peter Gabriel, Ray Phiri, Suzanne Vega, Scanner, Glen Velez, Elliot Sharp, Markus Rueter, and Karnataka College of Percussion. Most of his work has an environmental theme and involves the sounds of nature, live and in the studio. Crispell and Ganter invited him to collaborate with them to create Gradations of LIght because they wanted to evoke the times of day in nature through the suite of seven scores. The work is showing at the Kleinert James Center for the Arts in Woodstock until October 15 2017.
