"Open Secret", originally released on the New World Music label way back in 1987, is as fresh and dynamic today as it was in its' pioneering heyday. Re-released here, and digitally re-mastered, it now has 5 bonus tracks too, from the original sessions, and updated, more attractive, informative artwork. "Open Secret" marked Asher Quinn's debut as a new-age composer, and was recorded under his original name Denis Quinn… before he became 'Asha' and then Asher Quinn. Produced with Genesis founding member, classical guitarist Anthony Phillips, and featuring such luminaries as lead guitarist Andy Latimer of Camel, and Tony Freer of The Enid, it became an instant 'hit' in the new-age and ambient charts around the world. With a compelling blend of folk, ethnic and classical melodies and arrangements, "Open Secret" had pastoral, epic, sometimes even prog-rock feel to it, and yet was utterly diverse and unique in that way, rather like Mike Oldfield's "Tubular Bells"… one never knew quite what to expect next, but it was always beautiful. The Vangelis-like 'Soldier of love' was used by various spiritual organisations as a kind of anthem, whilst 'Sacred heart' … the opening track…is an entirely Baroque classical minuet. The title track has a certain prog-rock, filmic intensity to it. Utterly captivating to listen to, it defies all genre, really… there are elements of classical, folk, and prog-rock certainly, but then even 'easy-listening' and 'relaxing' would also hit the mark. The unique new-age quality which holds it all together is a kind of one-world spirituality that emanates from the eclectic music. The bonus tracks are a further surprise… one long and haunting improvised piano piece, and then some very delicate vocal ballads, which became more a feature of Asher's style later. One fan spent 20 years trying to track down the album having heard a snatch of it on a Tennessee radio station once, and been hooked! It's that kind of music… it leaves you wanting more.
