B.S.P. - EP
"Ain't to much I haven't done in this life" states hip-hop artist Rockey. I was named after my grandfather's favorite boxer undefeated heavy-weight champion Rocky Marciano. "Rocky was tough, and retired undefeated in his professional career"; not a bad guy to be named after. "I always knew I was special, a champion and I just had to get out of my surroundings". I grew up in St. Louis with a mother who home-schooled my siblings and I, and a father who played drums for Little Milton and other artists of that time. He influenced my love for and with music. At the age of 15, Rockey was put out of his mother's house and left to fend for himself. It was here that Rockey got a taste of street life. " I knew the things I was doing was not who I was; it was just things that I did at a time when I was frustrated and lost". "I ran with gangs, sold drugs, and went to jail". For most hip-hop fans this is credibility...you can't talk it if you ain't live it, but Rockey didn't want to live it anymore. "You can only dodge so many bullets until one of them hits you"! It was this testimony that lead Rockey to leave St. Louis for Atlanta with his musical mentor Kelly Love Jones. Rockey honed his skills and made the right musical connections and garnered the attention of underground and commerical artists alike. I have had the opportunity to open for some of the biggest names in music; Common, Keith Murray, Algebra and Fertile Ground to name a few. Rockey is also making a name for himself over in Germany with producer/DJ Jay Haze and DJ Easy. "When I go there (Germany) it's always such a shock to be loved by so many; our following is getting bigger and bigger! Having dropped 3 independent albums since 2006: Round One, Fireseazon, Black Star Power (BSP the EP) to cult success and a increasingly rising fan base on his Myspace-myspace.com/rockeystl page; Rockey is hard at work on his 4th not yet titled independent album and concert tour for the Spring of 2009. "It's my turn now" states Rockey this new album is that album where it all comes together. With every album you feel a since a pride, and excitement because it's your baby but this album feels special, this one is special. The stars have aligned, the production is the best its ever been, and lyrically I'm at the top of my game. I 've stretched myself and thought outside the box as much as possible. My influences on this album is more melodic, and rhythmic. I thought as futuristic as possible but I still wanted to keep my political messages there, and I still wanted to speak about real, current issues. I want my music to have a purpose. I want to entertain and make you dance but sill keep you aware". Music provided Rockey a creative outlet to be powerful. "I am showing you what St. Louis is about, we're lyrical, and we have our own swag and I want to showcase that. It's not only Country Grammar, and Right Thur". "I respect what those artists do, but I want to show and let people hear the St. Louis you don't see". "I rap for the kids who run with gangs, sell dope, and drop out of school because I was one of them. I'm here to tell them that there is a way out of that path, I'm living proof of that. The stars are aligned for me to be here and do this, I made a choice to change my life and follow my dream!
