Pictures of a Thousand Words: The concept of the full-length album is one that seems to be becoming rather archaic in the digital age of the YouTube single and the 5 song EP. As people’s attention-spans continue to shorten and they are forced to express their entire thoughts in 144 characters or 15 second audio clips, the idea of a piece of art that requires forty minutes of listening to fully experience is becoming foreign, while the 3 minute radio-single is the new staple of the modern music-listener. I do believe in the album format as an artistic platform, and composed this album specifically as such: one continuous listening experience. So here’s my album! Any musician will tell you that you need two or more different notes to make a chord, and so likewise I haven’t worried too much about trying to find a single “style” of music in which to express myself. Rather I have tried to capture snippets of my musical life that truly excite me and I believe are worth sharing: with the aim of creating a stylistic harmony among them. The success of this idea of “harmony through contrast” is no better personified than by my home-town of Durban. Durban is a melting pot of contrasting Western, Eastern and African cultures, and yet still carries a distinct “Durban-ness” to it, and is colourful and enriching beyond the sum of its parts. I learned a lot during the course of the production of this album and I genuinely hope that you the listener will enjoy it as much as I did creating it!
