Procne

Procne

Salò follow on from their impressive self titled debut with the “Procne” EP – clocking in at just under 23 minutes, Procne comprises nine tracks of raw energy. The bands sound stems from a shared love of the discordant end of 80s and 90s post-hardcore, such as Fugazi, Shudder To Think, The Jesus Lizard and Polvo, while also bringing in a range of more leftfield influences, from Swans to Arab On Radar. Salò use these sources of inspiration as a springboard for their ideas – keeping one foot in the past whilst retaining an exploratory edge that places their sound firmly in the here and now. The new EP reflects the band’s interest in improvisation, with three of the tracks being excerpted from pieces recorded spontaneously in one take in the studio. The band also take inspiration from their interest in cinema and literature – song lyrics and titles make subtle and not-so-subtle nods to the works of Philip K. Dick, Franz Kafka, Alfred Hitchcock and David Lynch, amongst others. Salò’s live shows have gained infamy for their unhinged intensity, with the band putting sweat and (often literal) blood into every show. Much of the audience are intrigued, some are repelled, but no-one forgets witnessing a Salò show. Another vital part of the band’s chemistry is their choice to eschew the traditional lead singer or frontman position in favour of dividing vocal duties three ways, with each member taking his turn. The “Procne” EP was recorded, mixed and mastered at Chime Studios by engineer Ross McGowan (United Fruit, Dananananaykroyd, Ex-Wives). Ross recorded the band’s first material, and they were never in doubt that they wanted to work with him again. “We worked with Ross for the second time at Chime in July 2012 – temporarily relocated from its usual base in Shettleston to a community centre in Renfrew. Ross is very much of the Albini school of engineering; he keeps the sounds natural and doesn’t interfere with the creative process. He’s a pleasure to work with and consistently gets results.” As with the first EP, the artwork for their second release comes courtesy of Nick Blinko, renowned modern artist and founder of the famously idiosyncratic anarcho-punk band Rudimentary Peni. Blinko’s artwork perfectly compliments the dark, intense sounds of this record. PRESS “They deserve to go far” – The Skinny “Yelpingly, complicatedly, danceably, screamingly good” - Drowned in Sound “Noisemakers Salò have crafted a truly remarkable EP” - Music Liberation “You simply can’t play like this or write songs like this unless you really f**king mean it, because those of us to whom it does mean something can see through you a mile off.” - PostBlogAsF*ck “[Salò's EP] frightens you and captivates you fifty different times within certain tracks; and is the dominant partner in the music-listener relationship.” – RaveChild “Salò break the mould when it comes to head pummelling dirty rock. With no definitive lead singer and the trio each taking turns to sing, it is something brilliant to witness.” Glasgow PodcArt
