Four Seasons One God
Each of these four songs was a timely and unique gift from God for a particular season in my life. The Lord's Prayer One morning I woke up with a beautiful melody in my head. As I was singing it in the shower, the Lord began to speak. “Sing this melody to The Lord's Prayer”. I tried to ignore it, but eventually gave in and said "All right Lord, I’ll do it”. As I began to sing the melody with those words, it just started to flow. I got dressed, picked up the guitar and the song was finished before breakfast. The following summer, my father in-law Bob passed away unexpectedly and I sang it at his memorial service. Eighteen months later, my mother in-law Sarah passed away, and this recorded version was played at her memorial service. Susan's parents were both followers of Jesus Christ, and we are comforted to know they now reside with our Father, who art in heaven. The Sun Will Shine This song came after our son Robin moved to Buffalo, New York with his lovely wife Coralie. Having lived in Southern California for 28 years, Robin was in for a big change of season. A few months into his first Buffalo winter, he called his mom and poured his heart out. Things were going pretty rough. He hadn't seen the sun in months, among other things. I began to ask God "What can I say to encourage my son?" The answer came quickly. (Philippians 4:6) Don't worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. If you do this . . . The Sun Will Shine Again someday. After sharing this with my son over the phone, I picked up my guitar and began to write this song. A few months later, I played it for Robin and Coralie in Buffalo. When I finished playing, tears were flowing all around. He Paid The Price This song depicts the ongoing story of my salvation and restoration through Jesus Christ. Just after graduating from high school, my life began to take a downward turn. As my family unraveled and my girlfriend said goodbye, I embraced songwriting as a means of survival. It wasn’t working. Depression set in and I began to sink into despair. Then something wonderful happened on a warm summer night as I was contemplating how to end my life. The phone rang, and I was invited to attend a concert by Danny Taylor in Ithaca, N.Y. I don’t remember much about the songs he sang, but I do remember what happened after he stopped singing. Danny began to speak about God’s love for us. He talked about Jesus Christ and described a personal relationship with Him. His words melted my heart and I began to sense the presence of God like never before in my life. It was warm and pure and radiant and extremely powerful. I was ready to experience a personal relationship with God. I prayed a prayer in my heart along with Danny Taylor that night and the tears flowed freely from my eyes as I accepted Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior. My walk with God since then has taken many a twist and turn. Let’s just say that it’s a work in progress. Unfailing Love It was December 10, 2007 and the Brown family was gathered in Hollywood, CA to celebrate Robin’s 25th birthday. Only one family member was missing, our daughter Lauren. Then came a phone call and the celebration seemed to grind to a halt. In retrospect, it was the answer to many years of fervent prayer. My daughter had just hit bottom after a long and painful downward journey that started when she was 12 years old. We had all but given up hope and recently came to the point of begging God to save our daughter before it was too late. At Susan's company Christmas party the week before, we spent much of the evening enlisting fellow believers to pray for Lauren. The miracle we had prayed for was finally at hand, but we didn't know it yet. A few days later I woke up with a hauntingly beautiful melody in my head. Later that day, as I sat alone with my guitar, I began to cry. Eight years of pain, watching my daughter struggle in the quick sand had come to a head. Then in the middle of my tears I heard the Lord speak with gentle and firm assurance. "Even though you may not understand, rest assured your Father has a plan". I began to sing those words along with the melody from the night before and within hours the song was complete. It was a message of love and encouragement for our family. Four months later, Lauren came to know Jesus Christ and has blossomed into the beautiful young lady God created her to be. This November, I will walk Lauren down the aisle at her wedding. Thank you Jesus.
