III
DIIE are a four-piece psych-punk band whose music welds the anodyne sounds of classic psych-rock and desert jazz to ear-splitting noise, endless cosmische rhythms and unapologetic guitar shredding. The result is weird, but so are the people who make it. "III" is their debut full-length, following the release of two EPs, "DIIE" and "UFOs Satanic Terror". Following the trajectory of those albums, which saw the band's heavy motoric sound grow wilder and more expansive with each song, "III" presents a complete vision of the band DIIE. Over the course of an hour, the album follows the course of a Day/Night cycle, guided along by the ambient interludes with Arabic titles. In between, we hear the sunny post-punk of "Upper Faiw;" the grungy, high-noon churn of "Untransfigured" and "Saguto Geometry Report;" the sunset glow of "Skeletonizer Report" and "Realtor Sunset;" and the midnight-black of the album's closing, three-part Maghrib Suite. The day/night concept helpfully arranges these parts in order to easier survey the gigantic, weird and darkly colorful hellscape that DIIE conjure up with this, their most ridiculous and satisfying creation. "III" is also not just the culmination of years of playing and months of work, but also the combined experience of the band members' pedigrees, ranging from influential dream-pop band Fire in the Northern Firs, gloom-pop group Hollow Boys, psych rock heavies Magic Castles, vintage shoegaze masters Colfax Abbey, DJ collective Transmission and the robotic improvisation of Good Day, Montag among many, many others. It is no coincidence that III bristles with an eclectic and infectious creative energy that leads the band down as many bizarrely yet melodically satisfying pathways as they can find. "III" was recorded over the course of many months, starting with a couple of sessions that mixed tightly rehearsed performance with completely improvised songs and interludes, some of which were recorded with purposefully bizarre methodologies (like swapping all acoustic/electric instruments for electronic ones, obscure yet guided improvisation, heavy re-sampling and deleting entire parts/songs/sections at will). The album was recorded, mixed and mastered at Ecstattic Studio, while being performed by DIIE, aka Adam Kirsch (Guitar, Synth, Programming), Ali Jaafar (Vocals, Guitar, Synth), Scott Weller (Drums, Electronic) and Shane Kramer (Bass, Synth).
