by Rolf SemprebonTiger Thrush contains 99 untitled tracks in less than 68 minutes and is similar to a previous Ami Yoshida release simply called ., a credit-card sized CD-EP that fit 13 very short tracks in about four-and-a-half minutes. Like ., and unlike an earlier full-length Spiritual Voice, Tiger Thrush is Yoshida's voice with no other accompaniment. Tokyo avant-garde artist Yoshida constructs short, Dadaistic sound poems similar to people like Henri Chopin and Jaap Blonk, using her voice to create strange textures and noises, at times pushing it beyond something that sounds like a human voice. Guttural rhythms, birdlike chirpings, baby-ish babble, coughing, tongue clicking, and throat drones create little sound collages that run two-and-a-half minutes or less to brief strange utterances that last a few seconds. There are times when it has the stark harshness of an ambient industrial soundscape, then at other times she'll let out baby-like utterances and liquid noises that are far earthier, though still very strange stuff. Unlike works by Blonk and Chopin, even the longer pieces on Tiger Thrush don't really develop, but with the shear variety of different sounds on the 99 tracks, Yoshida has put together a fascinating work.
